Common foundation types
- Compacted gravel pad — drains well, common for barrels on cradles
- Concrete slab — durable and level, higher cost
- Pavers on a compacted base — attractive, must stay level
- Deck — must be engineered to carry the loaded weight
What to check
Read the manufacturer's foundation section for minimum size, levelness tolerance and load guidance. Plan the pad larger than the footprint for access and drip-line drainage.
Drainage and moisture
Standing water shortens the life of any wooden sauna. Keep the base above surrounding grade and direct runoff away.
