How Much Does a Sauna Cost to Run?

Running cost comes down to simple arithmetic — heater power × hours on × duty cycle × your electricity rate — but real-world usage varies with weather, insulation and thermostat cycling.

The formula

kWh per session = heater kW × (preheat hours + session hours) × utilization factor. Multiply by your rate in $/kWh for session cost. The tool applies one assumed utilization factor to both preheat and session time; it is not measured consumption.

What changes real usage

Heaters cycle on and off once the sauna reaches temperature, so the element isn't drawing full power the whole time. Cold or windy weather, poor door seals and long preheats increase consumption.

Find your rate

Use your utility tariff or bill for the rate applicable to your sessions, including variable delivery charges. EIA Table 5.6.A provides state and sector averages for context, not your tariff. Time-of-use rates may differ by session time.
